Developmental and Structural Section Korn, Robert [1]. Reflexive Nearest Neighbor Analysis in Plant Morphology. Reflexive nearest neighbors are those loci closest to each other than to other loci such as partners on a dance floor. Random distribution of reflexive nearest neighbors follows the equation f(RNN) = n/(n+1))n/2 where f is frequency and n is the average number of adjacent loci. For the 1D case where n = 2 the expected frequency is 0.667 and is 0.655 for the leaf serration. In 2D expectation is 0.629 ( n = 6) and stomata arrangement in Begonia is 0.644. The3D case is 0.616 (n = 14) and stone cells in the Barlett pear give values of 0.65 and 0.66 from thin slices in two different directions. Ordered pairing, as in cell proliferation and branching, give different f(RNN) values as will be discussed. The application of RNN analysis in plant morphology adds a new perspective on understanding form. Broader Impacts:
