Pollination Biology Prior, Natalie [1], Han, Jun [2], Hardie, Darryl [2], Smith, Derek [2], Von Aderkas, Patrick [1]. Pollination drops in cycads. Cycads produce pollination drops that capture and transport pollen to the interior of the ovule. It is known that pollination drops of other gymnosperm groups contain rich mixtures of mineral and organic components, including proteins. This has led to the idea that pollination drops may play a more dynamic role in pollen-ovule interactions. We have collected pollination drops from four species of cycads: Cycas rumphii, Ceratozamia kuesteriana, Ceratozamia hildae and Zamia furfuracea. Our goal is to analyze these samples for protein and peptide content. Sample volume is the limiting factor in this research. For example, a single drop of Z. furfuracea has a volume of approximately 0.03 microlitres. We are working to develop an extraction method suitable for preparing small volumes of drop samples for LC-MS/MS analysis. Broader Impacts:
