Comparative Gynoecial Development in Boraginaceae and Lamiaceae.

Boraginaceaeand Lamiaceae traditionally have been thought to be closely related due to similarities in gynoecial characters (i.e., the presence of a gynobasic style and a 4-lobed ovary) in members of both families. Despite these similar gynoecial features, phylogenetic data suggest that the two families are not closely related, although both are members of Lamiidae. Through developmental studies utilizing histology and light microscopy, we have identified differences, between the two families, in the formation of the gynoecium. In Lamiaceae, the style elongates prior to the development of the lobes of the ovary, which form as the gynoecial primordium bulges outward. In contrast, in Boraginaceae the gynoecium forms from a wide gynobase, with the ovary developing before the style begins to elongate. These early developmental differences provide evidence of the parallel evolution of this unusual type of gynoecium as well as various manners in which this unique gynoecium can develop.
