Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Carter, Benjamin [1], Shevock, Jim [2], Nostratinia, Sonia [1]. New insight into the systematics and biogeography of Scouleriaceae based on molecular phylogenetic evidence. Scouleriaceae is a small family of mosses with three currently recognized species occurring in temperate regions of North and South America, Tasmania and east Asia. To test the current species circumscriptions and evaluate the standing hypothesis explaining the global distribution, we generated a phylogenetic hypothesis using ITS and three chloroplast loci. Preliminary results support the monophyly of Sclouleriaceae and of the genera Scouleria and Tridontium. A putative undescribed species from California and Oregon was recovered with strong support, as was an east Asian species that was synonomized with S. aquatica in the most recent monographic work. Phylogenetic relationships inferred from the data support major reinterpretation of both morphological evolution and global biogeography within the family. Broader Impacts:
