Reassessing phylogenetic relationships in the Polypodium vulgare complex (Polypodiaceae) using nuclear gapCp sequence data. The Polypodium vulgare complex (Polypodiaceae) is not only a fern icon, but among the best-studied plant taxa to comprise a morphologically confusing and reticulate species complex. Once considered a single circumtemperate species, P. vulgare has been splintered into 17 diploid and polyploid taxa in the wake of hybridization experiments, cytotaxonomic work, and isozyme studies conducted during the 20th century. Despite considerable effort, however, evolutionary relationships among the diploid segregates of the P. vulgare complex remain only partially resolved. Here we present a phylogeny based on newly generated sequence data from the low copy nuclear gene gapCp. Our sampling includes all known diploids in the P. vulgare complex, several members of the closely related P. plesiosorum group, and a selection of outgroup taxa, including the enigmatic Pleurosoriopsis makinoi ,which some studies suggest is closely related to the P. vulgare complex. This phylogeny provides an updated platform to reassess morphological evolution, reconstruct historical and biogeographic patterns of reticulation, and identify additional segregate taxa. Inparticular, it provides additional support for the recognition of a new allotetraploid segregate from Japan - the previously hypothesized and provisionally named Polypodium "okiense."
