Phylogenetics of Nolina (Nolineae, Ruscaceae).

Despite the use of phylogenomic approaches to further resolve relationships in the Ruscaceae, relationships of Nolineae to other genera of the Ruscaceae remain unclear, although Liriope and Maianthemum appear as probable closest relatives of the tribe. Thus in our phylogenetic analysis focusing on Nolina five outgroup taxa for Nolineae were included: Aspidistra, Eriospermum, Liriope, Maianthemum, and Ruscus; in addition to three Dasylirion and six Beaucarnea species. We used a large plastid data set (8119bp), as well as ITS, for 38 taxa (24 in Nolina) to elucidate relationships among Nolina species and further resolve relationships between Nolina and closest relatives. While support for the monophyly of each of the three main groups in Nolineae, Beaucarnea, Dasylirion and Nolina is strong, some relationships within Nolina based on ITS remain unresolved. The plastid dataset resolves most relationships among broadly defined species groups within Nolina. Potential sources of incongruence between cpDNA and nrDNA will be discussed, comparing the signal of noncoding (4025 bp) and coding (4094 bp) plastid regions within Nolina. The potential utility of candidate low copy nuclear loci in Nolina obtained from genomic data, sampling representatives of Nolineae and other Ruscaceae, will be compared in order to identify the most informative nuclear loci for more comprehensive sampling within Nolina.
