High floristic diversity in a small preserved area on the eastern slopes of the Colombian Cordillera Oriental.

The angiosperms of the "Nature Trail Hyca-Quye" (Boyaca State), on the eastern slopes of the Colombian Cordillera Oriental, were inventoried. The nature trail lays within a private natural reserve that protects the tropical wet forest; it trail has a length of 3.5 km and is at 900 m above sea level. This forest is characterized by having good level of repair and recovery, which allows finding a large number of native plants in a relatively small area. There, 345 species, 250 genera and 94 families were recorded; they include six naturalized species, as well as four vulnerable or nearly threatened species according to IUCN categories. Families with the most species are Orchidaceae (31), Asteraceae (20), Rubiaceae (15) and Fabaceae (14); about half of the recorded families are represented by one species. Genera with the most species are: Peperomia (Piperaceae) and Solanum (Solanaceae), each with seven species; Hyptis (Lamiaceae) and Begonia (Begoniaceae), each with six species; Ficus (Moraceae) and Epidendrum (Orchidaceae), each with five species; and Anthurium (Araceae), Cecropia(Urticaceae), Clusia (Clusiaceae)and Piper (Piperaceae), each with four species. The inventory, the first for the reserve, has contributed important information for the management and conservation of this area.Dichotomous keys for the identification of the plant families and species of the "Nature Trail Hyca-Quye" were made. Morphological descriptions, photographs of vegetative and reproductive structures, excicatae, category of threat (if any), habitat preferences, comments on their geographic distribution were produced for all species.
