Student Engagement and Assessment Tools (SEATs) for Large Section Botany Course.

Engaging students in a meaningful way and assessing their learning gains are important tasks for educators at all levels, and they are also interests of the instructors/institute involved in teaching large section courses. With the explosion of computer assisted student assessment strategies, assessment tools applicable to large section courses are rapidly evolving and their effectiveness remain to be tested. Effective learning assessment methods should provide an educator an insight into a prior knowledge and misconceptions that students have and that information could be used in an effective/efficient unit/lesson planning. It should also give the instructor benefit of identifying students' strengths and weaknesses regarding content going to be covered. In this presentation, we will present our strategies of student engagement and assessment tools used in our introductory botany and biology classrooms with more than 100 students.
